Originally from Mexico, vanilla is a vine that clings to a tree to grow. A little history…

The Aztec name for vanilla, tlilxot chiti” means “black pod”. The first mention of vanilla is found in the Chronicles of the Aztec ruler Itzcoatl (1427-1440). The Aztecs and Mayans knew how to preserve the aroma of this spice and have used it for centuries, among other things in cocoa drinks to soften the bitterness.

The pre-Columbians also used vanilla as a diuretic and depurative, and gave it aphrodisiac and curative properties.

A century later, in 1518, conquistador Hernan Cortes brought the first Mexican vanilla plants to Europe.

Unfortunately, for more than two centuries, the various attempts to produce vanilla have failed, because only the Melipona bee, specific to Mexico, ensures the fertilization essential for the formation of the fruit.

In 1836, the Belgian botanist Charles Morren discovered artificial pollination of the orchid. A few years later, in 1841, Edmond Albius, a young slave from Bourne aged 12, managed to find, all alone, how to carry out the manual fertilization of each vanilla flower, thus replacing the Melipona bee.

A major discovery, still in use, which made it possible to develop vanilla cultivation on Reunion Island, then in Madagascar.
