Some notions of botany
Native to Southern and Western Europe (Portugal, Spain, France, Great Britain, Ireland), and North Africa (Algeria, Morocco), Roman chamomile is today cultivated on a large scale in the temperate regions, particularly in Anjou where siliceous soils suit it.
Also called noble chamomile, this delicate white flower with a yellow center, very fragrant, is one of the most appreciated medicinal plants. It is recognized by the WHO, ESCOP and the European Pharmacopoeia.
A little history….
Symbol of the sun, Roman chamomile was very popular in Antiquity.
Dedicated to the Egyptian god Ra because of its supposed healing properties, it was used to embalm the dead, including Pharaoh Ramses II.
For their part, the Greeks used it to promote sleep and relaxation. Its name comes from the Greek “khamaimelon” (apple that grows on the ground).
In the Middle Ages, chamomile was often used at public celebrations because of the subtle scent it distilled.
