What is Dr. Valnet's Cinnamon Essential Oil?
Cinnamomum zeylanicum
(Lauraceae family)
Some basic botany
Native to Sri Lanka, the cinnamon tree grows to a height of 6 to 12 meters and is cultivated in other tropical regions, notably the West Indies and Madagascar. Its evergreen, oval leaves are a glossy green, its flowers are greenish with an unpleasant odor, and its fruit is a club-shaped, purple berry. Its thick, rough bark is harvested by farmers during the rainy season.
Long considered a true treasure, a symbol of power and wealth, Ceylon cinnamon is one of the oldest known and most widely used spices in the world. It should not be confused with Chinese cinnamon or cassia cinnamon.
A little bit of history…
The term "cinnamon," which appeared in the 12th century, originally meant "reed," probably because of the tubular shape of its bark sticks. It appears in the Old Testament (in the Book of Kings) and is mentioned in numerous ancient Chinese, Sanskrit, and Egyptian texts.
It was used for its medicinal properties, but also for religious ceremonies and magical rites.
The Greeks and Romans valued it primarily for its aphrodisiac properties, but also used it as a disinfectant.
Brought to France by the Crusaders, like many spices, cinnamon was for a long time a luxury product before its use gradually became more widespread from the Renaissance onwards.
