Whether Italian or Turkish, the mystery persists as to the exact origin of the bergamot tree, halfway between the bitter orange tree and the lemon tree. It is one of the components of Eau de Cologne and perfumes the famous bergamots.

Bergamot essential oil has calming and balancing properties. Its delicate fragrance offers a most elegant olfactory setting, and its subtle flavor will enhance your most refined dishes.

Precautions for use:

Highly discouraged for external use on the skin because it is highly photosensitizing and causes the appearance of oxidative spots on the skin. It can be irritating in its pure state.

Some notions of botany

The bergamot tree is closely related to the bitter orange tree (sour orange), but its exact origins are uncertain. It is believed to have originated from a cross between a bitter orange tree and a lime tree, or between a bitter orange tree and a lemon tree. Bergamot is a small citrus fruit that resembles a lemon with a thick, yellow-green skin and weighs between 80 and 200 grams. Its flesh is slightly acidic and bitter, and its zest gives off a very distinctive, powerful fragrance.

Since the 18th century, the bergamot tree has been cultivated primarily in a province of Italy that stretches from Reggio di Calabria across the Strait of Messina to the Ionian Sea. Bergamot is rarely used as a food, and is quite difficult to find on the market.

A little history…

Some claim that the bergamot tree originated in the Orient and was introduced to Europe by the Crusaders. Its name comes from the Turkish word Bey armadé (lord's pear), due to its distinctive shape. Others believe it was brought back from the Canary Islands by Christopher Columbus, and that its name comes from the town of Berga, north of Barcelona.

Fresh and very floral, bergamot is one of the most widely used ingredients in perfumery, particularly in colognes. It is still found, among other things, in the composition of Guerlain's Eau de Cologne Impériale, created for Empress Eugénie.

On the skin: Carefully, diluted and without exposure to sunlight

It can be used diluted in a vegetable oil on covered areas of the body away from sunlight.

In broadcast:

It diffuses well in combination with citrus and lavender essences, for an atmosphere of pleasure and relaxation. It can be used in an inhaler.

Follow the directions and precautions for use and dosages. Perform a skin test on the crease of the elbow to avoid the risk of allergy, which is always possible. Apply one drop and wait 24 hours for a possible skin or other reaction. Be careful of the eyes!
