Organic Licorice Root Sticks
Are you looking for organic licorice root in stick form to prepare your infusions and decoctions—one of the oldest medicinal plants in the world, known for supporting the respiratory tract, soothing gastric mucosa, and adding incomparable natural sweetness to all your preparations? The Organic Licorice Root Sticks from L'Herbier de France (Glycyrrhiza glabra) are among the most historically documented medicinal plants, used in Egyptian, Chinese, Greek, and Roman medicine for over 4,000 years. Rich in glycyrrhizin (triterpene saponin), flavonoids (liquiritin, isoliquiritigenin), and polysaccharides, licorice is a major soothing, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant plant. 50g of organic root sticks. L'Herbier de France, certified Organic Agriculture.
The benefits of organic licorice root
- The ultimate soothing plant: The glycyrrhizin and mucilaginous polysaccharides in licorice form a protective film on the mucous membranes of the bronchi, throat, and stomach, shielding them from irritants and accelerating healing.
- Expectorant and bronchial decongestant: Licorice helps thin and expectorate bronchial mucus. It is one of the most traditional plants used for dry coughs and bronchitis.
- Protective and healing for gastric mucosa: Liquiritigenin (a licorice flavonoid) is one of the few plant-based active ingredients studied for healing gastric ulcers. DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) is a supplement specifically designed for this purpose.
- Natural sweetness 50 times greater than sugar: Glycyrrhizin is 50 times sweeter than sucrose, making licorice an ideal natural sweetener for softening bitter herbal teas (valerian, milk thistle, gentian) without adding glucose.
- Stick format for decoction: Root sticks release their active ingredients better in a simmered decoction than cut roots, in addition to the traditional and aromatic quality they provide.
Active ingredients and their traditional roles
Glycyrrhizin (glycyrrhizic acid)
Glycyrrhizin is the main saponin in licorice, representing 5 to 15% of the dried root. It gives licorice its characteristic sweet taste (50x sweeter than sugar). It exerts powerful anti-inflammatory (inhibits phospholipases and 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase), immunomodulatory, and antiviral properties. In excessive and prolonged use, it can cause hypertension due to sodium retention (mineralocorticoid effect). These properties relate to traditional use; EFSA claims regarding licorice focus on its risks rather than its benefits.
Flavonoids (liquiritin, isoliquiritigenin)
Licorice flavonoids are its main active ingredients for protecting gastric mucosa. Liquiritigenin (the aglycone of liquiritin) stimulates the production of gastric mucin and accelerates ulcer healing. Isoliquiritigenin is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent studied in oncology. These flavonoids are also responsible for the antispasmodic properties of licorice on the digestive tract.
Mucilaginous polysaccharides
Licorice polysaccharides form a viscous protective film on the mucous membranes of the bronchi, throat, and stomach. They soothe irritation and accelerate epithelial regeneration. This is the primary mechanism of licorice's soothing and expectorant action.
Phytoestrogens
Licorice contains isoflavonoid phytoestrogens (liquiritigenin, glabridin) which may have modulatory effects on female hormones. This explains certain traditional uses for female hormonal comfort but requires special attention in cases of hormone-dependent conditions.

How to prepare this decoction?
Break one or two root sticks into small pieces (5 to 10g). Place in a saucepan with 500ml of cold water. Bring to a boil, then let simmer over low heat for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain. Drink 2 cups per day. The decoction can also serve as a base for other herbal teas: add other plants once you turn off the heat and let steep for an additional 5 minutes. Licorice softens all preparations.
Important precautions
- Not recommended for people with high blood pressure: Glycyrrhizin can cause an increase in blood pressure due to water and sodium retention, especially with prolonged daily consumption
- Do not exceed 4 weeks of continuous consumption without medical advice
- Not recommended for people suffering from kidney disease or heart failure
- Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Not recommended for people taking diuretics, corticosteroids, or antihypertensives without medical advice
- Not recommended for people with a history of hormone-dependent conditions (breast cancer, endometriosis)
- Keep out of reach of children
FAQ
Can licorice help with quitting smoking?
This is a well-known traditional use: sucking on a licorice stick occupies the mouth and hands, mimics the smoking gesture, and provides an intense flavor that can reduce the craving for a cigarette. It is behavioral support, not pharmacological aid for smoking cessation.
How long can you consume licorice daily?
The German Commission E and the HMPC recommend not exceeding 4 to 6 weeks of daily consumption without medical supervision, due to the risk of hypertension and electrolyte imbalance linked to glycyrrhizin. For prolonged use, DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) is a glycyrrhizin-free alternative for gastric protection.
Is licorice suitable for children?
The flavor is appreciated by children, but the pharmacological properties of glycyrrhizin make regular use for children inadvisable. Occasional and moderate consumption (1 stick from time to time) is generally safe for healthy children, but a pediatrician's advice is recommended for regular use.
