What is Organic Juniper essential oil?

Some notions of botany

Native to the mountainous regions of the northern hemisphere, the juniper, also called "poor man's pepper", is a wild and robust thorny shrub, measuring between 4 and 15 meters high. . It is characterized by its very specific cones, called “galbules” (commonly called bays) composed of scales more or less welded together. It produces a dark blue edible fruit called juniper berry used for the manufacture of essential oil, but also for that of juniper alcohol, ancestor of gin, very popular in the north of France and Belgium.

A little history…

Juniper has been renowned for centuries for its antiseptic and purifying properties. Its leaves and tops were used for their purgative properties and its wood was burned in Antiquity and the Middle Ages during major epidemics. It is even claimed that it allowed Hippocrates to fight the plague in Athens. The Romans heated it to obtain cade oil which was used to wash the dead, while the Egyptians used it to treat arthritis, gout and rheumatic diseases. Juniper wood was also used in the composition of their ointments and perfumes, notably in that of the famous “kyphi”, considered, it is said, to be the ancestor of our eau de toilette.

In the 30s, an incense burner dating from around a thousand years BC and containing fragments of juniper wood was found in Crete.

In hospitals, until the 19th century, juniper berries were always burned to cleanse and purify the ambient air.
