The nopal, Opuntia ficus indica, more commonly called “prickly pear”, is a cactus of the Cactaceae family native to Mexico. After being discovered in the 16th century by the Spanish conquistadors, nopal was established in Europe, on the Mediterranean rim. It is also found in South Africa, on Reunion Island, and in India and Australia.

Cultivated mainly for the production of its fruits, nopal is naturally rich in vitamin C. It also serves as a natural coloring. In addition, in Mexico, it is widely used in traditional practice where the leaf, reduced to powder, is used to limit the absorption of fats.

Nopal is rich in fiber which has the capacity to bind in the stomach to part of the dietary fats ingested during the meal, and thus to capture them. The whole thing is then eliminated by natural means. Through this lipophilic property, it promotes slimming.
