History of Ylang Ylang Essential Oil
Ylang ylang is one of the most prized ingredients in perfumery. It is used in the composition of many famous perfumes, including Chanel No. 5.
In Alang-Alang, a dialect spoken in the Philippines, the term ylang ylang refers to the flowers that dance in the breeze, and in Indonesian, it means "flower of flowers," due to the flowery, sensual, and exotic scent of its blossoms.
In local traditional medicine, it was used to treat malaria
Reputed to be an aphrodisiac in Indonesia, its petals are traditionally spread on the bed of newlyweds.
In the Philippines, its flowers are braided with those of sampaguita (Arabian jasmine) to arrange them around holy images or to make necklaces.
Arriving in the 18th century in the Pacific Islands, ylang-ylang was used by the Vahine people. They macerated its petals in coconut oil to concoct an elixir to preserve the beauty of their skin and hair.
