What is Rosewood essential oil?
Aniba rosaeodora
(Lauraceae family)
Some notions of botany
Native to the rainforests of the Amazon and Latin America as far south as Guyana, rosewood is a shade-loving tropical tree with medium-sized, evergreen leaves. Its fragrant bark and heartwood are pinkish in color, while its grain is fine, hard, and compact, and its flowers are a very bright golden yellow. Synonymous with luxury and refinement, this tree was overexploited, particularly for the cabinetmaking and perfume industries (a very important source of linalool), before becoming a protected species. Our essential oil comes from forestry operations where trees are systematically replanted.
A bit of history
In perfumery, rosewood oil is derived from the highly fragrant, straw-yellow to copper-colored wood, however, all parts of the tree can be distilled.
In cabinetmaking, the name "rosewood" refers to trees widely used in the 17th century for marquetry, of the genus Dalbergia variabilis, or Dalbergia frutescens.
The term "rosewood" comes from the English "rosewood", which more broadly refers to the rosewood family made up of different varieties of Dalbergia.
