Symbol of Apollo, of wisdom united with heroism, virtues which lead to victory, the laurel woven into a crown was placed on the heads of young doctors of medicine, hence the word "baccalaureate" (bacca lauréa = berries of laurel). In Europe, its dried leaves are used in soups and broths; in India they are used fresh, in “ghee”.
