Alpha-lipoic acid is a complex co-enzyme that is produced naturally by the body from cysteine, another amino acid.

The chemical structure of alpha-lipoic acid (1,2-dithiolane-3-pentanoic acid) including two sulfur atoms (thiol) gives it specific capacities. This bond between the two sulfur atoms explains the function of alpha lipoic acid: as a coenzyme of pyruvate dehydrogenase, associated with another coenzyme derived from vitamin B1 (oxidative decarboxylation of alpha ketone acids), as a powerful antioxidant and as a chelator of minerals.
