Urucum (Bixa orellana), also called Annatto, is a tropical shrub native to the Amazon, whose intensely red seeds have been used by indigenous populations since pre-Inca times. The Urucum seed is exceptionally concentrated in carotenoids (bixin and norbixin), with a total carotenoid content 100 times higher than that of a carrot. Bixin is the characteristic carotenoid of Urucum, which is fat-soluble and a precursor to Vitamin A in the body.
