The L-Arginine / nitric oxide pathway
L-Arginine is the substrate for NO synthases (eNOS, nNOS, iNOS) which convert it into L-Citrulline and nitric oxide (NO). The NO produced by endothelial cells (eNOS) is the main regulator of vascular tone: it causes the relaxation of the smooth muscles of the arterial walls, leading to vasodilation and improved blood flow.
