Harpagophytum: an effective plant against osteoarthritis
Introduction :
Osteoarthritis is a common disease among older adults, characterized by the progressive breakdown of articular cartilage. It manifests itself as joint pain and stiffness, which can make daily activities difficult. To treat this condition, many people turn to harpagophytum, a plant native to Africa whose anti-inflammatory properties can help relieve osteoarthritis symptoms. In this article, we will explore the benefits of harpagophytum for osteoarthritis and the different ways you can use it to relieve your joint pain.
The anti-inflammatory properties of harpagophytum.
Harpagophytum is also known as devil's claw. This plant contains natural compounds, including iridoids, which have anti-inflammatory properties. These properties help reduce joint inflammation, which is a common symptom of osteoarthritis. Several studies have shown that harpagophytum can reduce inflammation and pain in people with osteoarthritis.
The benefits of harpagophytum for osteoarthritis.
In addition to its anti-inflammatory effect, harpagophytum can help relieve pain associated with osteoarthritis. The active compounds in harpagophytum may inhibit the production of prostaglandins, which are compounds that trigger pain and inflammation. Harpagophytum may also act as a natural pain reliever to reduce pain associated with osteoarthritis.
The benefits of harpagophytum for osteoarthritis have been confirmed in several clinical studies. For example, a study published in the Journal of Rheumatology in 2004 examined the effect of harpagophytum on pain and joint function in people with osteoarthritis of the hip or knee. Participants took harpagophytum for 8 weeks and the results showed significant improvement in pain and joint function, compared to the placebo group.
Another study published in 2012 in the journal “Rheumatology International” compared the effectiveness of harpagophytum to that of a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug in patients with knee osteoarthritis. The results showed that harpagophytum was as effective as a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug in relieving pain and inflammation, but with fewer side effects.
Other advantages and benefits of harpagophytum.
In addition to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, harpagophytum may have other health benefits. It can help improve joint mobility and flexibility, reduce muscle spasms, and act as an antioxidant to protect cells from free radical damage. It also aids digestion.
How to take harpagophytum?
Harpagophytum is available in different forms, including capsules, tablets and liquid extracts such as ampoules or mother tinctures. Common doses range from 500 to 2,000 milligrams per day, depending on the severity of osteoarthritis symptoms. Side effects are generally very rare, but may include nausea and abdominal pain. Be sure to read the contraindications on food supplements.
Harpagophytum may interact with plants and medications that inhibit blood clotting (blood thinners). One case of interaction has been reported with warfarin (Coumadin).
The duration of the treatments is generally 3 to 12 months depending on the case, breaks are possible and therefore additional treatments as well.
