Mother-of-pearl in food supplements against osteoporosis.
In this article, we are going to offer you as complete an update as possible on what we call “mother-of-pearl” used in the food supplement industry to regenerate bones and cartilage.
We are well placed to tell you about it because, as you may know, it is one of our flagship supplements.
Mother-of-pearl, what is it?
Definition:Mother-of-pearl is the interior coating, with iridescent reflections, of certain mollusc shells, synthesized by the mollusc and composed of aragonite crystals linked by a protein called conchyolin. It is a product that has long been sought after for decoration, marquetry, jewelry or button making, to the point that certain shells such as abalone have disappeared locally. Some are bred for mother-of-pearl and these are the ones we are going to talk about.
How does mother-of-pearl develop in the mollusk?
Mother-of-pearl is formed from a regular juxtaposition of layers of aragonite . This thickness is welded by an organic cement.
Mother-of-pearl results from a process of bio-transformation of minerals into rigid mineral structures (bio-mineralization), from a matrix formed of specific proteins. It results from the regular superposition of layers of conchiolin, aragonite crystals and traces of water and various ions whose particular arrangement causes interference of light radiation giving it its iridescent appearance.
We can clearly see how the layers of mother-of-pearl composed of Calcium aragonite and calcite accumulate in a pearl.
Characteristic of mother-of-pearl:
- Mother-of-pearl has particular mechanical and physicochemical characteristics that are very different from other minerals often based on calcium carbonate.
- it is a material relatively resistant to acids and heat, which we cannot reproduce. Biomineralization and all biochemical processes that can lead to the production, maintenance and protection of a mollusk shell.
- The quality and type of nacre formation vary depending on the species and during the stages of evolution.
- An organic substance, conchiolin is present in very small quantities in mother-of-pearl (around 4 to 6%) and determines its structuring by serving as “cement” for the aragonite crystals which represent 90%. Mother-of-pearl is made up of small aragonite crystals 500 nm thick stacked separated by a very thin layer (around 50 nm) of protein which ensures the toughness of the whole.
- the proteins helping to form nacre produce calcium carbonate in aragonite form; it would seem that the soluble part of these proteins is responsible for the formation of the crystal, while the insoluble part determines its density, size and quantity.
Mother-of-pearl resists acids better than shell. It reconstitutes itself after being pierced or damaged in a living shell.
What does science say about the therapeutic potential of mother-of-pearl for bone problems like osteoporosis?
Several studies have been carried out on the therapeutic potential of the molecules making up mother-of-pearl for osteoporosis problems in particular.Mother-of-pearl is not only a unique and particular source of calcium , but also a source of bio-active compounds on natural bone assimilation and resorption, as well as bone remodeling.
It was proven, after these studies, that taking mother-of-pearl had a real effect on reducing bone loss, that taking powdered mother-of-pearl is more effective than simple pure calcium carbonate in limiting bone loss. in a model of ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis (induced menopause) in rats.
This study also shows the protective effect of mother-of-pearl on bone stock.
Why take mother-of-pearl capsules from the Pleine Forme brand?
The mother-of-pearl used by us is extracted from the pearl of a mother-of-pearl mollusc: Hyriopsis cumingii . The properties of mother-of-pearl are linked to its structure and composition very close to those of human bone.
Hyriopsis cumingii
Mother-of-pearl contains all the substances present in our bones:
- Calcium in the form of aragonite (bone also contains calcium in the form of hydroxyapatite)
- all types of collagen (the organic framework of bone is itself made up of 90% collagen), as well as 16 amino acids and 13 minerals.
These natural substances rebalance and strengthen the organic (bone structure) and mineral framework of the body (the layers).
The presence of natural substances contained in mother-of-pearl allows optimal assimilation of calcium and promotes bone reconstruction.
This association of specific substances is identical in bone and in mother-of-pearl.

How to use Nacre Pleine Forme?
Osteoporosis and osteoarthritis:
1 capsule per day during a meal. To be effective, the treatment must be done continuously
Depending on the reading of your bone densitometry , or the feeling of your pain, the treatment can vary from 4 to 24 months. From our experience, we know that if you are in the red part, a minimum period of 12 to 24 months of treatment will be necessary to increase your bone density .
A second treatment the following year may be necessary to maintain the capital you obtained previously, you will then divide the treatment of the first year in half.
If you do 6 months the first year then 3 months will be enough the second to maintain bone mass.
(this dosage is an average of customer feedback, the advice must be adapted to each person)
For prevention from age 45:
You can also anticipate the fact of demineralization and loss of calcium by doing so-called preventive cures, especially in women.
Mother-of-pearl to fight against osteoporosis but not only.
Anti-fatigue, sports recovery:
1 capsule per day during a meal or at the end of training. The treatment can last as needed
-Helps the growth of children and adolescents:
1 capsule per day during mealsThis cure is only to be used when the deficiency or the need is proven, it can be regulated by a suitable diet, the cure will therefore be short-lived, of the order of 3 months maximum per year.

How are our Mother of Pearl capsules made?
Because we want to be as precise and transparent as possible, we are going to reveal to you some manufacturing secrets and exclusive photos, from the cultivation to the packaging of our food supplement Mother-of-pearl capsules to fight osteoporosis.
1-Pearl culture
Pearl cultivation takes place in breeding ponds, our operator is a German company which selects the pearls most appropriate to our request. (Specifications)We have chosen freshwater pearls from breeding ponds, in order to preserve the marine environment as much as possible and to avoid allergies to products from the sea.
In addition, cultivation in freshwater ponds is done in a virtuous manner because the pond hosts, in turn, shrimp and then mother-of-pearl farms. The shrimp's droppings serve as food for the growth of the mother-of-pearl mollusc. This avoids nitrogen pollution due to the addition of human-made food or industrial inputs. The Nacre mollusc thus plays the role of filter and cleaner of the cultural environment.
Our mother-of-pearl is of Ecocert quality , but for reasons of final price to consumers, we have chosen not to pay for the label and therefore to reduce the final purchase price.
*Hyriopsis cumingii is the name of the mollusc that produces the mother-of-pearl, with its very special calcium which acts to maintain normal bones.
From pearl to mother-of-pearl in capsules.
This visual will allow you to follow the evolution of the manufacturing line.
Step 1: Selecting beads manually
The sorting is done by hand between the different qualities of pearl. From step 2 to step 8, this is the manufacturing secret and technical characteristics that we keep to ourselves ;)
From step 8, the mother-of-pearl powder is transported to Angers where our packaging laboratory is located.
He carries out the filling of (vegetable) capsules for us and ensures the application of our specifications, namely: the total weight, the quantity of active ingredients per capsule, the labeling, the declaration to the DGCCRF and the delivery. to your Pleine Forme store.
It also ensures the sanitary quality of the packaging with strict European standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 22000.
